Good evening my wonderful bakers and cake lovers. I hope you enjoyed your weekend. tomorrow is a fresh start of a new week and I wish every reader a stress-free week ahead.

In this segment of the Naija Bakers’ Diary Series, I had a chat with a beautiful mind from the east. She is a baker of repute who has put a lot into pushing herself into the forefront of cake making in the eastern region in particular and Nigeria in general.

I am referring to  Yvonne Onyeukwu, CEO of Cakes by Ivy. Let’s get to read her story line and learn from her life as a baker




May we know your name and Business name and where you are based?

My name is Onyewu Yvonne Ekeoma. My business name is officially known as Fine Ivy Catering Limited but popularly known as cakesbyivy. Am based in Owerri ,Imo State.


When (the year) did you start this Cake Biz?

I started my cake business 12th February 2014.


What are the things that prompted you to start up your Cake Biz as in How your love for cake decorating started?

it all started when i attended a cake class I enjoyed every bit of d training. when I got home I tried it and I enjoyed it. I decided to give it a trial as d day passes, I found out that I fell in love with my design and creativity.


What was the first official job you remembered making as a Cake designer and how did you feel then?

My first official job as a cake designer was my friend’s birthday cake I was excited I asked her not to pay.

Can you tell us your greatest challenges in the Cake Biz or the ups and downs you have faced as a Cake designer?

My first wedding cake, then I was inexperienced, I had issues with my fondant because of weather. I have faced few ups and downs in my bakery. For example I got an emergency order from my client. I started baking by 11pm and my gas finished.

What’s your greatest cake decorating triumph?

I made a G wagon cake and I almost cried when I finished designing the cake


How would you describe your decorating style?

My decoration style is unique, outstanding and classy


What favourite Cakes do you enjoy baking and decorating and also the favourite colours you love working with?

The cakes I enjoy baking…. chocolate, strawberry, Red velvet and coconut. My favourite colours I enjoy working with is Red, white and black


What are the benefits (gains) you have reaped as a Cake designer or your greatest achievements?

I have achieved a lot. I won last year IFEA as d Youngest Entrepreneur in Imo State, I have also gain increase in contact, growth in my business area, financial, substantial and sustainable growth


A lot of people shy off cakes for health reasons and avoiding sugar. Are there options for these classes of people?

Yes there are options for weight watchers. free sugar cake (wheat cake)



What would you say is one of the biggest lessons you have learnt in your career as a cake designer?

I have learnt to be straight forward, being honest, how to associate and interact with people


What’s your most treasured piece of cake decorating tool or kit?

I love my smoother


What’s your advice to upcoming cake designers in the Nigerian Cake Industry?

My advice to upcoming bakers…. Be consistent, focused, and prayerful. Never stop believing in yourself , patience and above all trust God.
